Project updates about the Okabena Infrastructure Improvements project will be added here.

The contractor started construction on April 13th. The sanitary sewer is installed along Honeysuckle Ln. The contractor will begin construction of the sanitary sewer along Elevator Dr. this week.

Project Overview / Objectives

  • Construction for the City of Okabena’s Infrastructure Improvements Project began April 2026. The locations of construction activities associated with the project are shown on the map and the work to be completed consists of replacement of watermains, sanitary and storm sewers, lift station building improvements, and the repaving of affected roadways. The project will also include a connection to the Lincoln Pipestone Rural Water System. Most of this work will occur during the summer of 2026, with final construction extending into the fall of 2027.

Watermain Construction

  • Replace aging pipes to reduce watermain breaks

Sanitary Sewer Reconstruction

  • Reduce inflow and infiltration
  • Correct slopes of pipes to proper 10 State Standards

Storm Sewer Reconstruction

  • Install a storm sewer system to current design standards
  • Reduce localized flooding throughout the city during large storm events

Lift Station Rehabilitation

  • Install new shingles and siding on the existing lift station building
  • Install a flow meter on the existing forcemain

Street Reconstruction

  • First layer of pavement installed in 2026
  • Final layer of pavement installed in spring/summer 2027

Lincoln Pipestone Rural Water System Connection

  • Improve water quality for residents

Anticipated schedule

The following is a summary of the preliminary project schedule:

  • October 2025: Advertisement for Bid and Bid Opening (Contractor: Duininck Inc)
  • April 2026: Start of construction
  • July 2027: Substantial Completion
  • October 2027: Final Completion

During construction, there may be some additional heavy truck and equipment traffic coming through your town. It will be necessary to close streets partially or completely to vehicular traffic for your safety. Street parking may also be restricted at some times and in certain areas.

Project funding for the City of Okabena projects is 41.3% grants:  $6.37M of $15.43M Total
