City of South Haven

Drinking Water Infrastructure, Wastewater, & Storm Sewer Improvements

With infrastructure constructed in the 1960’s, utility systems in the City of South Haven, including drinking water infrastructure, were in very poor condition and failing. The City’s previous engineering consultant had focused only on a narrow scope in attempts to evaluate and identify how extensive the City’s infrastructure needs were. The City engaged Bollig Engineering and what started as a new well and well house project transformed into a much-needed new water tower, new lift station, SCADA monitoring capabilities from one location, new watermains, and an improved storm sewer system with multiple funding agencies being pursued.

The City has been utilizing a well which pumps water directly into the drinking water system. Several issues have been identified in the distribution system necessitating replacement of the existing well. Bollig Engineering began working with a hydrogeologist and engaged local private well owners to identify potential locations for municipal wells in areas where water quality would be adequate to not require extensive treatment. Upon identifying a suitable location, a well company was hired to drill test wells to verify the findings.

Phase 1

Utility work in South Haven included installing two new wells, a well house with watermain connection, new water tower, watermain distribution system work, and a new main lift station. This work is in progress with portions that are complete.

Future Phases

After Phase 1 is complete, Phase 2 work will include the remaining utility system improvements needed including watermain replacement, lift station road flood protection, and stormwater outlet improvements. Learn more about Phase 2 work in South Haven here.

Funding Success

Bollig Engineering worked with the City of South Haven in the pursuit of funding to address their water infrastructure concerns. With the City’s proactive approach and their City Clerk, Melissa Stenson, presenting to the legislature, the City was awarded an additional $3.5 Million Dollar Grant for Phase 2 drinking water infrastructure. South Haven was also recently awarded PFA (Public Facilities Authority) funding.

City Clerk & Treasurer,
City of South Haven

“With new infrastructure and our new water treatment plant we will be able to have better water for our community and be able to expand our water system for new development, which the City of South Haven needs. Without Bollig’s help with that, we wouldn’t be able to do it.”
